Full Description

Larderello, Piazza Leopolda
Geothermal Museum

(2 hours) The visit begins inside the Larderello Geothermal Museum, one of the most symbolic and fascinating places of industrial Tuscany. Here, the story leads visitors to discover the history of the relationship between humans and geothermal resources: from the first observations of natural manifestations, to pioneering experiments, and up to modern technologies. The journey culminates with the most renowned and revolutionary topic, the production of clean energy. The museum experience is full of suggestions: models, original documents, vintage photographs, and multimedia installations narrate the evolution of geothermal energy and the importance of this territory in the global context.

Accompanied by an expert guide, visitors immerse themselves in a path that combines scientific outreach with landscape appreciation. The museum rooms showcase not only the power of nature but also the complexity of drilling networks, 20th-century technological discoveries, and Larderello’s contribution to the energy transition, becoming an international sustainability model.

Distance 2 km (5 min)
Transfer by private transport

Larderello, Demonstration Fumarole, Geothermal Well 120

After the museum visit, participants move independently, by private transport, to the high-pressure demonstration fumarole, located about two kilometers away. Here, the experience becomes more physical, almost theatrical: steam emerges forcefully from the ground in a controlled explosion of energy and sound. Opening the geothermal valve creates a dense, continuous jet, visible even from afar, leaving first-time visitors breathless. The sound is deep, enveloping, conveying the invisible power that the Earth holds beneath its surface.

The guide accompanies the group to the edges of the safety area and explains, in accessible and engaging language, what happens underground: how steam forms, how it is reached through drilling, and why this type of energy is today one of the cleanest, safest, and most reliable resources available.

(1 hour) Lunch can be taken independently at the Museum visitor center.

(2 hours) In the early afternoon, the experience continues in the Parco delle Biancane, a unique place where geothermal energy manifests on the surface with an almost primal spectacle. The guided loop trail partly overlaps on the outbound and return paths and partly follows an alternative route to offer a complete and surprising view of the landscape.

You will walk among smoking rocks, bubbling pools, and hills shaped by centuries of thermal activity. In some sections, the ground is completely white due to sulfur emissions, giving the park its name. The “biancane” are the typical geological formations of this area, sculpted by the combined action of steam and minerals. The atmosphere is lunar, almost surreal, and the air is rich with smells and sounds that make the hike a fully immersive sensory experience.

The guide leads the group in discovering these extraordinary natural phenomena, clearly and engagingly explaining geothermal mechanisms, the origin of fumaroles, the importance of these ecosystems for biodiversity, and the balance between humans and nature in a territory that has coexisted with Earth’s energy for centuries.

Between steps, you can observe striking color contrasts, hear the muffled sound of escaping steam, and feel the heat emanating from the ground. An unforgettable experience, especially for those seeing with their own eyes how our planet is alive and active, even on the surface.

(2 hours) In the early afternoon, the experience continues in the Fumarole Park, a geothermal area of great scientific interest where Earth’s heat manifests through steam columns, fumaroles, and thermal pools. The guided trail is designed to offer a complete view of geothermal phenomena and their interaction with the surrounding landscape.

You will walk among hot rocks, puffs of steam, and mineral formations, observing up close how underground activity affects the soil and ecosystem. The Fumarole Park gets its name from the natural gas emissions constantly escaping from ground fissures, creating spectacular and surprising scenes.

The guide explains the chemical and physical processes behind geothermal phenomena, the origin of gases and fumaroles, and the crucial role of these environments in conserving local biodiversity. The guide also explains how humans have interacted with these natural resources, using them for energy and scientific study.

Submitting the form does not constitute a confirmed booking. It is an informational request that initiates direct contact with the organizers.
The booking becomes effective only upon receipt of confirmation by email from the organizers.

Until payment is made, the experience is not officially confirmed, and the selected date remains provisional.
The option will automatically expire if not reconfirmed within the agreed time frame.

What Is an Option?

During booking, you can select the “Provisional Option” box.
An option is a request for availability that lets you express interest in a specific experience without any obligation.
It is often used when the client still needs to finalize other aspects of the trip (e.g. accommodation, transportation) but wishes to secure a tentative date.

Each option has a set expiration date, which will be sent via email.
If the client does not confirm the booking by that deadline, the option automatically expires. The duration of the option depends on how far in advance the requested date is.

How to Pay?

The balance must be paid within a few days of receiving the electronic invoice. Only if a fiscal receipt is requested may payment be made on site.

If invoicing is required and the booking is made within the same month as the visit, payment must be made in a single transaction. For bookings totaling up to €200.00, payment is due immediately after the final agreement.

Accepted payment methods for invoiced bookings include:
Bank Transfer, Postal Order (pre-filled on request), or Credit Card in the name of the VAT holder indicated on the invoice.

How Are Transfers Between Sites Managed?

For all activities, your own vehicle is required, especially when the itinerary includes multiple sites located some distance apart. Transfers are not included in our services, and no dedicated shuttle is provided.

Transportation must be arranged independently.

Distances between sites are manageable:

  • Geothermal Museum ↔ Soffione: approx. 2 km

  • Monterotondo ↔ Sasso Pisano: approx. 10 km

  • Monterotondo ↔ Larderello: approx. 20 km

Each stop must therefore be reached by your own means (car or coach) following the directions provided upon booking.

If you have difficulty arranging transport, contact us — we’ll help you find the best solution.

What Happens If the Group Is Late?

Punctuality is essential to ensure smooth service and avoid overlapping with other bookings.

Please do not arrive too early or too late. In case of delay, the duration of the service may be shortened. In the event of a major delay, the activity may be postponed or canceled according to our service conditions.

What Happens in Case of Bad Weather?

Guided tours of the Geothermal Museum take place regardless of weather conditions.

For outdoor activities (excursions, traverses, geosite visits), the management reserves the right to evaluate feasibility on the day, depending on weather conditions. In the event of heavy rain or adverse weather, the program may be modified, suspended, or canceled for safety reasons only.

Our staff will always do their best to ensure the scheduled activities can take place, even under less-than-ideal conditions.
Please wear appropriate clothing and bring rain protection.

In the event of cancellations or modifications due to force majeure, no refund will be issued, as these situations are beyond the organizer’s control.

What Happens If the Number of Participants Decreases?

Reductions in participant numbers communicated at least 10 days before the visit will be invoiced based on the actual number of participants.

After that deadline, refunds will be granted only up to a maximum of 10% of the total number of participants.

What Happens in Case of No-Show?

If the group fails to show up or does not cancel at least 48 hours in advance, 100% of the service cost will be retained as a penalty.

No refunds are issued for last-minute cancellations, as guides and staff are specifically scheduled and engaged for the reserved experience, dedicating time, resources, and organization to its successful execution.

The only exception applies to public force majeure events, duly documented, such as:

  • Official municipal or Civil Protection orders mandating school closures or travel bans, either from the point of origin or to the destination.

In these cases, official documentation (e.g. school notice, ordinance, public announcement) must be provided.

Personal circumstances such as illness, injury, or other impediments, even if certified, do not constitute grounds for refund, as they are not recognized among the conditions for cancellation.
