Biancane Park
INSPIRATION
A landscape beyond time
The Biancane Park is an extraordinary geosite where geothermal energy reveals its primordial and fascinating face. Located between the towns of Monterotondo Marittimo and Castelnuovo Val di Cecina, in Tuscany, it gives visitors the impression of walking on a distant planet — with smoking craters, white soils cut by fractures, and continuous steam vents. The landscape is deeply transformed, sculpted by millennia of geothermal activity that surfaces here without filters. It is a place where nature remains powerful, unstable, and alive, where every step tells the story of the dialogue between the surface and the depths of the Earth’s crust.
ENERGY
Steam beneath your feet
The name Biancane comes from the light color of the rocks, shaped by heat and geothermal fluids. Walking along the trails, you’ll encounter natural fumaroles, hot springs, and jets of steam at extremely high temperatures — clear evidence of the intense geothermal activity beneath the ground, where rock temperatures can exceed 100°C just a few centimeters below the surface. The park is a rare and spectacular example of how the Earth’s energy manifests itself on the surface in a continuous, natural, and powerfully visible way.

TRAIL
A path between nature and science
The circular trail inside the park is accessible and well-marked, ideal for guided tours or independent exploration. Exploring the Biancane geosite allows visitors to delve into the fundamentals of geothermal energy, its origins, and the environmental transformations it produces. Each stop becomes an opportunity to observe, understand, and ask questions. The path winds through open landscapes reaching as far as the sea, with distinctive rock outcrops, sudden steam jets, and thermal springs. It’s an excursion suitable for schools, families, nature lovers, and anyone wishing to immerse themselves in living geology.
KNOWLEDGE
Biancane, a place of research
This environment is not only a natural wonder but also an open-air laboratory for geologists, researchers, and renewable energy enthusiasts. The Biancane area exposes what is usually found hundreds of meters underground: extreme conditions, gases, and soil alterations. For decades, it has served as a privileged observation point for studying geothermal systems, contributing to advances in scientific knowledge and to the understanding of unique natural phenomena. It offers a direct encounter with science applied to the landscape.
FUTURE
Sustainable experiences
Here, the steam vents and fumaroles emerging from the ground tell a millennia-old story of geothermal energy. Visiting this park is not only a visual experience but also a moment for deep reflection. By admiring nature’s power, we come to understand its potential and the crucial role geothermal energy can play for humanity. Walking the park’s trails represents an exceptional example of sustainable tourism — perfect for educational exploration as well as for the pure joy of discovery and adventure.
