Demonstration Steam Jet
POWER
The breath of the Earth
In the heart of Tuscany, in Larderello, at the center of the historic Devil’s Valley, the demonstration steam jet showcases the hidden power of our planet. It does so with a deafening jet of steam rising from deep underground. Driven by natural pressure, the steam jet is not a simulation but a real, controlled phenomenon, offering a unique opportunity to observe geothermal steam emerging from the earth at extremely high temperatures. It’s a full sensory experience: sound, heat, and the movement of air. The experience conveys the sense of something alive pulsing beneath our feet—unseen but present, an integral part of our history and our future.
TECHNOLOGY
How a steam jet works
The steam jet is an actual geothermal well that in the past contributed to electricity production, connected to the network of steam pipelines and geothermal power plants. A specially installed valve is opened to allow the steam to escape at high speed, creating a continuous, visible jet. The purpose of the demonstration is educational: to show up close, yet safely, the force of this incredible natural resource in all its spectacular power. The guide explains how geothermal reservoirs are formed, how fluids are extracted, and how the steam reaches turbines to be converted into clean, renewable energy. Each visit becomes a true open-air lesson on Earth physics and sustainable technologies.

EDUCATION
An explosion that teaches
Observing the steam jet is designed for schools, families, enthusiasts, and curious visitors. When the valve is opened, the guide leads the group in understanding what is happening: which natural forces are at play, what precautions are taken, and why this energy is so important in today’s context. The experience is deeply impactful because it is not just to be seen, but to be felt. The deafening roar of the steam, the white column rising into the air, the heat spreading over the spectators: every element stimulates the senses and evokes emotion. It is a moment that leaves a lasting impression, raising awareness and leaving a mark on all participants.
ENVIRONMENT
A landscape shaped by energy
The steam jet is set in a unique landscape: in the heart of Devil’s Valley, with the imposing presence of the industrial infrastructure that made this place world-famous. This area reflects both the impact of energy on the environment and how it can coexist with it. Larderello is one of the few places in the world where the interaction between nature and technology can be observed so directly. The visit also encourages reflection on good practices and environmental sustainability: harness energy, but with care and respect. The constantly changing landscape bears witness to the harmonious coexistence of industrial activity and the surrounding territory.
CONNECTION
The gateway to a broader journey
A visit to the demonstration steam jet is often just the beginning. A few kilometers away is the Geothermal Museum, where the physical experience finds its theoretical complement. After “feeling” the steam, visitors can “understand” where it comes from, how it is used, and the role it plays in our energy transition. The combination of the steam jet and museum offers a complete journey: from awe to knowledge, from phenomenon to application. For this reason, the activity is highly recommended as part of a combined experience—a full day of education spanning science, nature, and local heritage.
